Question

How do I troubleshoot a dead GFCI receptacle?

Answer

To troubleshoot a dead GFCI receptacle in a residential system:

1. **Verify Power Supply**
   - Check the circuit breaker/fuse for the GFCI's circuit. Reset the breaker or replace the fuse if tripped/blown.

2. **Test Other Outlets on the Circuit**
   - Determine if other outlets on the same line have power. This helps isolate whether the issue is upstream.

3. **Reset the GFCI**
   - Press the "Reset" button firmly. If it doesn't stay reset, there may be a ground fault or wiring issue.

4. **Check for Tripped GFCI Downstream or Upstream**
   - Some GFCIs protect other outlets. Locate and reset any other GFCIs in the circuit.

5. **Test for Voltage at the Receptacle**
   - Use a multimeter or voltage tester to check for ~120V between Line Hot and Neutral terminals.
   - No voltage indicates a wiring or upstream power problem.

6. **Inspect Wiring in the Box**
   - Turn off power at the breaker first.
   - Remove the receptacle and check for loose, corroded, or reversed line/load wires.
   - Confirm Line (power in) is connected to the GFCI Line terminals, not Load terminals.

7. **Replace the GFCI if Necessary**
   - If wiring is correct and power is present but the GFCI won't reset or provide power, replace the device.

**Assumptions:**
- Power is coming from a standard residential 120V source.
- No unusual load conditions or outdoor/weather exposure issues.

Following these steps should identify the cause of a dead GFCI and guide you to a fix.
